To anyone who's bursting with a dream
To anyone who's searching for a way to break free!"
Come Alive, The Greatest Showman, 2017
It’s February at Zajac Ranch and things are moving and shaking. Camper applications opened in January and we already have almost 100 campers registered! We are giddy thinking about all of the old and new friends we will get to see at camp this summer.
This Sheriff's Report is inspired by something we think is really important to camp, campers, staff and all. It’s a big concept but it means something unique to camp - The Power of Music.
Music is an essential part of camp. From camp songs in the dining hall and supportive cheers to music bingo and unplanned karaoke dance parties, music and camp are important to combine. Here’s why:
Music allows campers to express themselves in ways they may not be able to with words or actions. It gives them a chance to find themselves through someone else’s passion and craft and express who they are and what they are feeling to those around them. Here’s more on some of our favorite camp music moments:
One of the key examples of the celebration of self through music at camp is a crowd FAVOURITE program… (drum roll, please…) the TALENT SHOW! You will be challenged to make it through a camp talent show without being brought to happy tears at least once. It is a pure joyful moment when campers get to shine in front of a community that fully supports them. Each talent show truly feels like magic.
Campfire songs allow campers and staff to challenge themselves and step outside their comfort zone in a safe and supportive environment. It allows them to sing and be silly together in a way that they may not get to outside of camp.
The dance is one of the biggest music inspired events that takes place every week at camp. We host a semi-formal dance on the last night of each week of camp. It allows campers and staff to celebrate the week together and end it in style! It’s a wonderful night and a lot of campers’ highlight of the week.
The power of music is bigger than camp, and we are excited to be hosting two Inclusive Community Dances! Intended to be a community event for all members of the inclusive community, these dances are open to all and free to attend. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come enjoy a night of fun together. (All we ask is for participants to bring a peanut free "treat to share" as admittance, and even this isn't really a requirement.)
Camp Director Emily looks forward to seeing you in Vancouver or Victoria. She has been hosting these dances for the last three years and is proud they are growing. This will be the first one in Vancouver and we are grateful for your help in spreading the word about these dances to any and all of your family, friends, coworkers and camp folk!
