Zajac Ranch Job Description – Unit Leader
Organizational Overview:
Located on the shores of Stave Lake in Mission, BC, just one hour east of Vancouver, Zajac Ranch for Children is situated on over 40 acres of pristine forested land. During the summer months, Zajac Ranch provides camps for children and young adults with chronic, life threatening and/or debilitating conditions. In the off-season, Zajac Ranch welcomes school groups and private rentals. Revenue raised from site rentals goes to supporting Zajac Ranch summer medical camps.

Position Type: Contract, Seasonal
Length of Contract: 2.5 months (June 15, 2026 – September 4, 2026) *some camp session exceptions apply due to private camps
Compensation: $162.00 per day; MANDT Relational and Technical Training & Certification; plus, meals and accommodation provided during camp sessions.

Position Summary:
The Unit Leader plays a vital senior staff role at Zajac Ranch, providing leadership, coordination, and mentorship to the camp’s counsellor teams. Responsible for managing daily operations, supervising staff, and ensuring camper well-being, the Unit Leader helps create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable environment for all participants.
Unit Leaders model professionalism, compassion, and teamwork—serving as both a support system and role model for Wranglers and Team Leads.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Staff Management & Leadership
- Provide mentorship, supervision, and guidance to counsellors and Team Leads.
- Conduct mid-summer and final performance evaluations for all assigned staff.
- Participate in the staff disciplinary process as needed and make recommendations to Directors regarding performance issues.
- Foster a positive and collaborative work environment that aligns with Zajac Ranch’s values and standards.
2. Operations & Administration
- Attend daily senior staff meetings to support communication and smooth camp operations.
- Oversee camper arrival and departure procedures, ensuring a welcoming and efficient process.
- Collaborate with the Food Services department to coordinate mealtimes and snacks.
- Report maintenance needs or safety concerns promptly to the Maintenance Superintendent or Directors.
- Ensure all documentation, including incident and follow-up reports (IFRs), are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
3. Camper Care & Program Support
- Oversee camper welfare within assigned dorms, ensuring individual needs are met with care and consistency.
- Write and review camper “quick sheets,” night care logs, and outgoing reports.
- Support counsellors in providing adaptive strategies, modifications, or alternative options for campers as needed.
- Promote inclusion, empathy, and positive behavior through coaching and reinforcement.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in handling sensitive or emergency situations.
- Assist in crisis management, first aid, and emergency response as required.
- Contribute to the success of camp programs by assisting with activities, transitions, and special events.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Minimum two years of post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., Education, Child & Youth Care, Social Work, Behavioural Science, Pre-Health, or related).
- Experience supervising or mentoring staff, ideally in a camp or recreational environment.
- Strong leadership, organization, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced setting.
- Experience working with children or youth with medical conditions and/or neurodivergence (preferred).
- Minimum 18 years of age (required).
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C (required).
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required).
