Zajac Ranch Job Description – Rangers (Activity Specialist)
Organizational Overview:
Located on the shores of Stave Lake in Mission, BC, just one hour east of Vancouver, Zajac Ranch is situated on over 40 acres of pristine forested land. During the summer months, Zajac Ranch provides camps for children and young adults with chronic, life threatening and/or debilitating conditions. In the off-season, Zajac Ranch welcomes school groups and private rentals. Revenue raised from site rentals goes to supporting Zajac Ranch summer medical camps.

Length of Contract: 2.5 months (June 15, 2026 – September 4, 2026) *some camp session exceptions apply due to private camps
Compensation: $150.00 per day; MANDT Relational and Technical Training & Certification; plus, meals and accommodation provided during camp sessions.

Position Summary:
Rangers are the Activity Specialists at Zajac Ranch for Children. Each Ranger leads programming in a designated activity area—such as waterfront, ropes, equestrian, arts, or outdoor adventure—creating a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for campers of all abilities.
In addition to leading activities, Rangers also serve as cabin counsellors, providing supervision and support for campers during daily routines and non-program hours. Rangers play a vital role in fostering confidence, teamwork, and joy through adaptive recreation and compassionate care.
Key Responsibilities:
Camper Care
- Supervise and support campers to ensure their safety, health, and well-being throughout their stay.
- Model positive behavior, encourage participation, and assist campers with daily routines (meals, hygiene, rest periods, medication times, etc.).
- Work collaboratively with cabin teams and leadership staff to create a supportive and inclusive environment.
- Promote a safe atmosphere and respond appropriately to behavioral or crisis situations using Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) techniques.
- Encourage camper participation through patience, problem-solving, and motivational support.
- Receive direction from Unit Leaders and Camper Care Team Leads for camper-related matters.
- When not leading programming, act as a fully engaged cabin counsellor.
Program Delivery
- Design and facilitate engaging, adaptive, and safe activity sessions tailored to camper interests and abilities.
- Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, inventoried, and safely stored.
- Encourage camper participation through creativity, enthusiasm, and positive reinforcement.
- Adhere to all Local Operating Policies, safety standards, and therapeutic recreation principles covered in staff training.
- Assist with camp-wide programs, such as evening activities, campfires, and theme days.
- Participate in staff meetings and contribute to team planning and communication.
Specialized Ranger Roles Available:
- Lifeguard (3) – NLS required. Supervise waterfront and pool programs safely.
- Canoe & Kayak (2) – NLS and paddling experience preferred. Lead canoeing/kayaking sessions and waterfront safety.
- Ropes Course (3) – Lead campers on high/low ropes and climbing wall (site-specific training provided).
- Creative Arts (1) – Facilitate arts, crafts, drama, and creative projects.
- Outdoor Adventure / STEM (1) – Lead nature-based and science-inspired programs such as archery, hiking, and orienteering.
- Equestrian (2) – Care for horses and barn animals, assist campers in riding and animal care sessions.
- Archery (1) – Facilitate archery programs and maintain equipment (training provided).
Qualifications & Experience:
- Experience working with children or youth in recreational, educational, or camp settings.
- Demonstrated leadership, adaptability, and enthusiasm for working with diverse campers.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Minimum 18 years of age (required).
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C (required).
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required).
- NLS or relevant activity certification preferred (depending on specialization).
Work Environment:
- Live-in position during camp sessions with weekends off.
- Outdoor, high-energy environment requiring flexibility and engagement.
- Active participation in both program facilitation and camper supervision.
