Zajac Ranch Job Description – Counsellor in Training (CIT) Coordinator
Organizational Overview:
Located on the shores of Stave Lake in Mission, BC, just one hour east of Vancouver, Zajac Ranch is situated on over 40 acres of pristine forested land. During the summer months, Zajac Ranch provides camps for children and young adults with chronic, life threatening and/or debilitating conditions. In the off-season, Zajac Ranch welcomes school groups and private rentals. Revenue raised from site rentals goes to supporting Zajac Ranch summer medical camps.

Direct Reports: Wrangler’s support CIT program
Position Type: Contract, Seasonal
Length of Contract: 2.5 months (June 15, 2026 – September 4, 2026) *some camp session exceptions apply due to private camps
Compensation: $150.00 per day; MANDT Relational and Technical Training & Certification; plus, meals and accommodation provided during camp sessions.

Position Summary:
The CIT Coordinator is a key member of the senior camp management team, responsible for leading and overseeing the Counsellor-in-Training (CIT) program. This role focuses on developing leadership, teamwork, and life skills in young adults while supporting them through a positive camp experience.
The CIT Coordinator designs and delivers engaging training, provides mentorship and supervision, and collaborates with senior staff to ensure program goals are met. They also assist with overall camp operations, crisis management, and safety procedures, reporting regularly to the Camp Directors.
Key Responsibilities
1. Program & Staff Supervision
- Develop and deliver leadership, communication, and emotional skill-building programs for CITs.
- Provide direct supervision, mentorship, and ongoing feedback to all CITs.
- Identify meaningful in-camp roles for CITs to support their learning and contribution to operations.
- Lead, plan, and adapt staff training sessions and CIT development workshops as needed.
- Conduct mid-summer and end-of-season evaluations in collaboration with the Camp Directors.
- Attend daily senior staff meetings and contribute to program coordination and decision-making.
- Maintain effective communication among all camp staff and ensure adherence to policies and procedures.
2. Camper Care & Inclusion
- Support campers and CITs by promoting inclusion, empathy, and adaptability across all activities.
- Provide creative adaptations and behavioral strategies to help participants succeed.
- Communicate with parents/guardians as needed to address support plans or provide updates.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment in all interactions.
- Assist in emergencies or first aid situations, deferring to senior staff when appropriate.
3. Safety & Operations
- Support emergency procedures and behavior management in collaboration with the Camp Director and Assistant Director.
- Promote safety awareness among all staff and CITs.
- Participate in delivering emergency procedure training and safety drills.
- Serve on a rotational “On-Call” schedule overnight, responding to emergencies as needed.
- Support rental group operations during off-season sessions, including setup, program delivery, and cleanup.
Qualifications:
- Strong belief in the value of inclusive camping for children and youth with medical needs.
- Bachelor’s degree or post-secondary education in recreation, social work, education, or related field (asset).
- Minimum 2 years of camp or youth leadership experience, preferably in a supervisory or training role.
- Experience supporting individuals with developmental or behavioral needs (asset).
- Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, adapt to changing situations, and work collaboratively.
- Minimum 18 years of age (required).
- Standard First Aid & CPR-C (required).
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening (required).
- Experience in camp programming (canoeing, ropes, archery, orienteering, etc.); NLS certification an asset.
Work Environment:
- Live-in role during camp sessions with weekends off.
- Requires flexibility, high energy, and the ability to work in an outdoor, fast-paced environment.
- Active participation in physical and recreational activities is expected.
